Title A name given to the resource Ida Jean Allen Subject The topic of the resource Veterans who served their community after their service. Description An account of the resource Ida Jean Allen was born in Webster, North Carolina in 1921. In 1943 Allen enlisted to serve in World War II, despite the fact many told her they did not take African Americans. However, Allen was selected to be one out of forty African American women nationwide to serve in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, WAAC. She received basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, the program involved map reading, military customs, and other essential skills needed in case she had to be sent over seas. She was then sent to Ft. Riley, Kansas where she spent the rest of her term. While stationed and training Allen had to eat, sleep, and recreate in segregated areas. Allen served in the US Army for three years before being honorably discharged. While doing her duty she maintained contact with friends and family in Jackson County, She has also been a dedicated member of her church. Her triumphant and honorable story shows a local hero overcoming adversity to serve our county.
