Description

The building that would eventually become Jones Temple AME Zion Church was first built in 1855 and used by Waynesville First Methodist until 1883, when a new church was built just off Pigeon Street. Jones Temple AME Zion Church broke off from Waynesville Methodist in 1898 and the first cornerstone was laid at the current site. In 1922 the building was finished and ever since then, it has been a beacon for the African American community in Haywood County. Unfortunately in recent years, membership has dropped due to members moving out of town or older members dying, but this does not hurt their spirit. Service is still held every Sunday morning, led by Reverend William E. Staley of Spartanburg, SC.
