Western Carolina's first African American student.

Description

Western Carolina University accepted the school’s first African American student in 1957. Levern Hamlin was the first black student to be admitted and enrolled in a predominantly white state-supported college in North Carolina, according to university records. Western is now home to over five hundred African Americans and many other minorities. Hamlin came back and served on the Board of Trustees, insuring Western’s future as an inclusive institution of higher learning.
