This particular event was in preparation for the summer time expenses needed for activities and other events. This event was held in 2014 during the spring. One of the many fundraisers they hold, this fish fry is essential for the Pigeon Center to stay afloat throughout the year. The money raised will go towards repairs for the center, summer camp for the children of the community, and food banks. Description An account of the resource This letter from Lin Forney, director of the Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center to the Director of Haywood County details the progress of repair work at the Pigeon Center in July, 21, 2015. Forney requests grant money from Haywood County so that the Pigeon Center can make necessary repairs to damages in order to acquire the African American school building. The Pigeon center continues to provide many community involved activities that keep the center thriving with culture and education. The Pigeon center now hosts after school and summer school programs that are inclusive to all community members. One can still resonate with the history of the African American culture that resides within the community and the history of the people who keep the Pigeon Center afloat. The Pigeon Center is now trying to “take ownership of the historic African American School building.” However, the Center is sustained only on donation and volunteer work, and currently does not have the funds to make repairs in order to utilize the school building. The acquisition of the African American school will allow the Pigeon Center to give new life to an old building that remains central to African American culture in Western North Carolina. Title A name given to the resource Haywood County Board of Commissioners Proposal Subject The topic of the resource Creation of Center Description An account of the resource • Noting a “lack of supervised activities and the absence of a place to facilitate those activities,” the Pigeon Community Development Club presented the Haywood County Board of Commissioners with a proposal to create a “unified community club” at the site of the former Haywood County Schools Instructional Materials Center. Prior to its life as the system’s IMC, prior to the desegregation of the county’s schools in 1964, the building was one of only two African American schools in the county. The club proposed a long-term lease for the property with the goal of making it a community center where the club could offer programming including health and fitness, recreational activities, and other family-oriented programming. Title A name given to the resource The Towne House Description An account of the resource The Towne House might have been owned by Myrtle and Maude, but Elizabeth was the star, known throughout Haywood County for her cooking. Various white social and political groups held meetings here regularly, and other local big shots came to enjoy the food. Elizabeth rarely got time off because Sundays were so busy for the restaurant. Elizabeth continued to work at the Towne House, until the late sixties, when she moved to Chapel Hill. The Towne House shut its doors not long after. Elizabeth's husband passed away when their daughter, Georgia, was three, leaving her to raise Georgia alone. Haley's father, Walter, helped Elizabeth a great deal in Georgia's upbringing. This is a photograph of Elizabeth and her brother Walter Jr., who was also a great help. Elizabeth was revered as an amazing mother who was extremely selfless. She loved her four grandchildren, who lovingly nicknamed her 'Big Mama.' Title A name given to the resource In the Kitchen Description An account of the resource Elizabeth was a wonderful cook, creating some of the most amazing dishes in Haywood County. She was first employed at the Garden Hotel, where she was the head cook, until the operation moved across the street to the Towne House. Elizabeth also worked as a personal cook for people throughout the community. Elizabeth was very neat and clean, and never allowed people with dirty hands to enter her kitchen. She was also very secretive, as she never gave out any of her recipes. The owners of the Towne House, Myrtle and Maude Jones, got along well with Elizabeth. Elizabeth even helped Mrs. Jones' youngest son, Sammy, get around because he was born with a condition that affected his mobility.
