The Colonial Theater: Alice Lowery's Impact

I wanted my children to experience things that

I hadn’t been able to experience,

and I don’t know where I got my nerve from,

but anything that I felt like we couldn’t do,

I was willing to give it a try.

-Alice Lowery

The picture shown above is of the historic Colonial Theater in Canton, North Carolina. This theater was the spot where Alice Lowery made her stand and took her daughter to the movies. The Colonial Theater still shows movies to this day, and anyone can now attend a showing with their family thanks to Alice. Her stand against racism reflects a struggle spanning decades challenging segregation.

Alice Lowery led her daugther into the Colonial Theater without hesitation, allowing others to follow in her footsteps. Her single act opened the Colonial Theater to an entire new part of the Canton community. The power of a single persons actions cannot be underestimated in the struggle to combat inequality.
