Nathaniel Lowery, and his wife Alice, 1953

Born in 1928, Nathaniel Lowery grew up in segregated Canton. Therefore black students could not attend the all-white high schools in Haywood County. Nathaniel had to leave the county to get a high school education. After he earned his diploma he returned to Canton and worked at the Champion Paper Mill. He then served two years in the Army and returned to work at Champion once again. While attending a Reynolds High School football game, he learned that the game needed a public address announcer and he volunteered for the position. Little did he know how life changing that game would be.
