Nat the Cat DJ'ing at WWIT

A representative from WWIT, a radio station in Canton, happened to be at the football game that Nat volunteered to announce. After hearing Lowery speak, he was offered a job at the station. Nathaniel spent a month as a guest alongside another deejay. In 1953 he earned his own hour long show from 5 pm to 6 pm. For the show he adopted the smooth talking persona of Nat the Cat. He would open the show with:

“It’s five past five and time to jive with your host who loves you the most, Nat the Cat. The next 55 we’ll fill in the jive to keep you mommy-oes and daddy-oes alive, so let’s cut the chatter and dig some of those cool Platters.”

Nat spun records from artists such as The Platters, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Elvis, and the Temptations. The number-one song on the Billboard Charts when Nat started DJ'ing in 1953 was "Song from Moulin Rouge" by Percy Faith.  In 1963, the year he finished deejaying, it was "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs, followed closely by the Beach Boys and "Surfin' USA".

Nathaniel Lowery died in 2008 at the age of 80.  He is still regarded as a beloved member of the Canton community for his ablitiy to bring together both white and black through music.
