Caney Fork

An interview with Baxter Wood, who grew up in Caney Fork, and has lived in Jackson County most of his life.

The Caney Fork community origanlly got its name for the creek that flows through the Township.The main road that runs through the Township is Caney Fork Road.

The area is served by two diffrent schools, the first being Cullowhee Valley School, and the second being Smoky Mountain High School. However, Prior to 1964 the schools that served the area were Johns Creek Elementary (pictured left) and Cullowhee High School. 

The Johns Creek Church is now a private residence. The new church is now located across the street from the original building.

Balsam Grove Baptist Church is a historical church which can be found in Caney Fork, located in Jackson County, North Carolina. In Baxter Wood interview he talks about how this is the church that his mother went to growing up.
