Desegregation in Haywood County closes and opens schools
The image above is from an article clipping of a Haywood County newspaper. The article discusses how easy it was to integrate black schools and white schools into two new schools, Pisgah and Tuscola High Schools. One of the schools that closed was Reynolds High School, an all black school. Reynolds was closed because of desegregation in Haywood County. Challenges that arose were issues of zoning and agreeing on names for the new schools. Mack Setser, who vividly remembers the act of desegregation and closing of segregated schools, believed that integration was an easy movement in Haywood County. Setser's recollection of the relative ease of integration speaks volumes for how leaders in the black and white communities in Haywood County were able to work together to intiate equality in the civil rights era.
